Recording - Central DF 27 October 2026
On Tuesday 27 October 2026, Central DF members enjoyed a fascinating talk by Michael Eaton of the topic of 'Pugin and Pecksniff - Architects Sacred and Profane' at The Charterhouse in London.
Unfortunately, our HGS forgot to press the 'Record' button until about 12 minutes into the talk! The remainder of Michael's talk is, however, available to watch by clicking on View the Recording
Pugin, Michael informed us, was born just a few weeks after Dickens and died at the age of 40 in 1852, so the two men were contemporaries. Pugin is known to have read and commented on Dickens's works, but Dickens references Pugin only once in his oeuvre.
It emerged in later discussion, that Pugin died in Ramsgate, just a few miles round the coast from Dickens's favourite holiday spot of Broadstairs, yet there is no evidence these two great men ever met (unless you know differently ...?)
