'Dickens and Victorian Psychology' reads Dickens's use of 1st-person point of view as part of his efforts to defend a dualist psychology against new physiological theories of consciousness. Through a reading of 'Edwin Drood,' this talk will show how the redefinition of the shared language of Victorian mental science undercut such efforts to theorize a psychology that transcended the material.
